#97 – Get all the writings by Oma & Opa from mom

The manuscript of my Oma's life, and the journals she kept in their final years.

My grandparents (aka Oma & Opa) had extremely interesting lives. Diamond smuggling, affairs, the holocaust, wars, all of these things played a part in the formation of our family.

Sometime in high school, I had the fore-thought to ask my Omi to write down her life story for me. At the time, I aspired to be a writer, and from what I had heard, her story would be the perfect start to a great novel!  Too my surprise, she actually did it! Not only that, but she also started writing journals for me as well. When I finally received the writings, there are 5 journals, 1 manuscript, and 1 half page written letter. The letter is from my Oma a few months after my Opa died, and it fell out of one of the journals like a scene from a movie. It explained my Opa’s death and the scattering of his ashes. It wasn’t as sad as it could have been, but I also did not have dry eyes when I put it down.

Unfortunately, the journals begin when my Opi was on the decline. His eyesight was already gone, and the Alzheimers had started to set in. From the few pages I have glanced, I will need a couple of boxes of tissues when I finally dive into these. My plan of action is to transcribe them first and provide copies to my entire family. From there I will decide what I want to do with the history and stories I find.

I am so thankful to Oma for writing these journals for me. I think that they will be eye-opening, touching and tear jerking all at the same time. I can not wait to read all about it.
