Busy Month…Foodler to the Rescue!

Seeing that my last post was on December 26th, I think you all can guess this has been a hectic month for me. Besides December and January being my busiest months at my full time job, the weight of the new year, my impending graduation from my EdM program this May and the life changing decisions that is forcing me to make….its really cold out!

What does all of this equal? Well, not much more than an excuse as to why I haven’t really been cooking or blogging. In my defence (yes, another excuse) I HAVE gotten some posts up for my blog on The Watertown Patch!

I digress….In the last 2 months, Foodler has come to my rescue. Now, hear me out. I have been endlessly skeptical of food delivery services. I just don’t get it. Why would you pay extra money, and wait extra time, when you can just as easily call a restaurant that delivers. Well, when Foodler reached out to me to try them with a credit, I had my opportunity to see why!

But the truth is, Foodler didn’t cost more. The delivery charges depended on the restaurant and the distance from you. So my local delivery joints charged the same fee as if I ordered through them directly. Plus there is the added bonus of being able to have delivery from restaurants who do not order the service themselves, or for whom you are outside of the delivery area.

The useability of the site is great. It keeps track of the restaurants you have ordered from, shows ratings from past customers, and makes suggestions based on your delivery history. All pretty useful!

So what about their delivery? Well, I ordered using Foodler a few times before writing this review in order to make sure service wasn’t dependent on the location. Every time, my order came EXACTLY in the estimated delivery time. My order was also correct each time.

My first order was from S & I To Go. Meh. The main dish was a little low on actual dish. The dumplings didn’t travel well. But the Fried Bananas….now those were amazing! I think the issue may have been because this restaurant WAS a good distance away. But the portion on the Spicy Prik Khing was really disappointing.

My next order was from Fiorella’s Express, which I have experience ordering from directly, so I knew what to expect. Once again, delivery was right on time. This time, with Fiorella’s being in my neighborhood, the food was hot and perfectly prepared. The Spincotta & Prosciutto Pizza was heavenly. The Pepperoni Fra Diavlo, while tasty, was way too heavy on the pepperoni. I did notice that the portion on the pasta was smaller than I remembered. So, I do have to wonder if they downsize the portions when you order from Foodler. Cafe Fiorella on Urbanspoon

Last week I ordered from another local go-to, Thyago’s. This time everything came exactly as it would have if I ordered from the restaurant.

So, my final assessment. A! Job well done Foodler! With the addition of being able to earn credit back to your account, my question is now: Why WOULDN’T I order from this food delivery service!

Disclaimer: Foodler.com offered me a $15 credit in order to try out their service in exchange for an honest and truthful review. All additional moneys spent were out of my pocket. As always, all of the opinions expressed in this review are my own.

The Best Chicken Kabobs for My Money…In 500 Words or Less

Boston Food Bloggers issued us a “homework” assignment in their last newsletter. The assignment challenged us to write a restaurant review in 500 words or less….with no pictures! If you have seen what food bloggers look like when they go out to eat, you know that asking us to put away our cameras is a pretty ballsy request. So, last Wednesday night after a late night in class, I decided to pick up dinner from my favorite local hole, Demo’s. I wanted something cheap, healthy, and scintillating to my taste buds (we aren’t allowed to use words like “tasty”, “delicious” or “yummy” for this “assignment”. They did not say we couldn’t use “parentheses” however). Now healthy, cheap and scintillating are not words that can generally be lumped together in fast food. But lucky, Demo’s is not a restaurant that is fond of being just a generalization.

Demo’s is, for all intents and purposes, a hole in the wall on the main strip of Mt Auburn Street in Watertown, MA. You walk in and instantly know that they have not redecorated the place since they initially opened gosh-knows-when. The blue diner booths and the linoleum floors do NOT give you the illusion that you are in for a five star meal, neither is the fact that you order at the counter. The locals sitting with their families, co-workers, or by themselves, DO tell you that this is a reliable restaurant with straight-forward, reliable fare.

So what about the food you ask? Well, as you can guess from the name, Demo’s is Greek in ethnicity. The menu is small and true to the most basic of Greek offerings. The kabobs are why the locals are really here. Available in either chicken, beef or lamb, the kabobs are delicately marinated to bring out their natural flavors, not mask them, and are fire grilled with onions and peppers. For just about $6 you can get the “Kabob Sandwich”, a meal consisting of one kabob, traditional greek salad, and pita bread. Dig in that wallet, and for a whopping $12 you can get a kabob dinner (2 kabobs, rice, greek salad and pita).

While the kabobs are healthy and pure, the greek salad is why I keep coming back. You know about my greek salad bias. Well, Demo’s is one of the only Greek joints in the Boston area that gets it right. A plate of nothing but iceberg lettuce, tomato, onion, feta and REAL greek dressing (aka: white vinegar, oil and a few seasonings). That is it. Nothing froo, froo, nothing creamy. Just real greek goodness.

If I hadn’t ended up in Watertown, I may have never found Demo’s. That would have been sad because it would mean I only would get GOOD greek food when I went home to Florida. Thank goodness for the small things in life…thank goodness for Demo’s!

And that, my friends, is my review in 500 words or less, and with no pictures! How’d I do?

Demo’s is located at 64 Mount Auburn Street, Watertown, MA 02472 617-924-9660

A Taste of Home and a Boston Brunchers Contest! Review of KO Catering and Pies

Note to reader: Please excuse my hair and the bags under my eyes in any following pictures. Thank you.

Ever since KO Catering & Pies popped on the Twitter scene, my co-worker and fellow foodie, Lara and I have been licking our chops! A traditional meat pie shop that will also be launching a food truck! It sounded to good to be true! Not only that, by they were actually doing an amazing job on Twitter too! Lara beat me to the punch with a brunch trip with her hubs to scout the place out.

This is what Lara had to say about her brunch experience: “My husband and I started our Halloween morning with a trip ‘down under’ for brekky at KO Pies and Catering.  Kara nicely explained the menu to us and told us that if anything caught our fancy they’d be able to make it for us.  We decided to stick to breakfast and ordered two dishes to share. First was the herbed potato rosti, served with two slow roasted tomato slices, thick cut australian bacon and topped with a fried egg. The potato rosti was crispy on the outside and steaming hot on the inside.  The combination of the slow roasted tomatoes and the runny egg yolk created a delicious sauce.  The bacon was thick, a little crispy, and full of flavor. The freshly cooked sweet corn fritters were served with avocado, lightly dressed arugula and two slices of bacon.  There were sweet corn kernels mixed in and the creamy avocado was a perfect complement.  Everyone else there for brekky had slabs of toasted sourdough – most spread with vegemite. For me, a meal isn’t complete without bread.  For ‘dessert’ we ordered toasted sourdough with cinnamon sugar.  The buttery, sugary, cinnamony toast was the perfect end to a delicious breakfast!  Maybe next time we’ll order the vegemite…”

Not only is Lara my partner in all things food related, but she is a great blogger & tweeter too, so don’t forget to check her out!

Back to the pies! A little history. Being born in S Africa, and raised by S African parents, meat pies and sausage rolls were a HUGE part of my culinary childhood. There was a tiny shack on Alternate 19 in Tarpon Springs, FL. that we would drive out to almost every weekend to stock up on them. The day that shack shut down was a sad day indeed. Since that time, meat pies and sausage rolls have been few and far between, and when you do find them, they are usually frozen.

Flash forward 20 years, I am in Boston, and KO Catering & Pies has arrived! We headed down the South Boston for lunch, and were not disappointed! When we arrived, we introduced ourselves to the owners, Kara & Sam, who have been fabulous on Twitter and in emails. We chatted with Kara about the business, and you can instantly tell that this lady has a serious passion for all things Australia & Meat Pie! And she is a foodie! The care in which she talked about how they create their recipes was refreshing. It was also nice to hear how they are moving slowly to make sure they do everything just right!

On to the ordering! We ordered and original meat pie and a chicken schnitzel burger, a Lamington and a slice of banana bread. I also took 2 sausage rolls home for dinner. When the pie arrived, I asked for forks, and in no uncertain terms was told that you ALWAYS eat a meat pie with your hands.

Everything tasted as good as it looked! Freshly cooked, crispy, flaky, buttery, delicious. And then there was dessert. Who even knew a meat pie shop would have dessert, and GREAT dessert at that! We had a slice of fresh-baked chocolate banana bread and a Lamington, which is a chocolate soaked, coconut covered yellow cake of some sort. Who cares what it is, it is yummy!

The shop is small, mainly for take-out, with an 8 seater farm table to the side and 2 window bar seats. It is quaint, and you feel like you are eating at an old family friend’s table.

Which leads me to….

Restaurant Review: Nud Pob, Boston

Every day around 11:15, my coworker and I have the following conversation :
Me: Did you bring your lunch today
Her: Yes
Me: I didn’t, what should I get
Her: **Lists a bunch of restaurants**
Me: Hello Nud Pob, I’d like to order the P1 with Ground Chicken for pick-up please
The P1: Hot Basil w/ Ground Chicken

Always call ahead! During lunch there is almost always a pretty hefty line, and if you call ahead, you still have to wait in that line, but at least your food is waiting for you at the end of the line!  My go-to is the Basil Chicken, but everything I have tried here is solid. The Pad Thai is of special note. I am not a huge Pad Thai fan, but theirs is something special!
